MakerBot Replicator Summary

The MakerBot Replicator has some outstanding modern features not found in other 3D printers today, including Wi-Fi, cloud connectivity, onboard camera and mobile app control. It is easy to use and capable of producing high quality output. However, these “wow factor” features must be balanced with the high price tag, known reliability issues and limited filament support when considering the Replicator.

User applicability

  • Best for: Casual Hobbyists and Educators
  • Might be good for: Semi-Professionals
  • Not appropriate for: Pragmatists and Enthusiasts

Maximum build volume for the Replicator is on the high end at 9.9 x 7.8 x 5.9 inches. With a 100-micron layer resolution and 11-micron XY positioning accuracy, the Replicator is capable of printing high quality parts. However, the device is limited to only PLA filament.

The MakerBot Replicator comes standard with the company’s Smart Extruder, which has been known to jam and wear out quickly. MakerBot has developed a new Smart Extruder+, which is much more reliable, but unfortunately you’ll need to pay an extra fee ($99 as of this writing) to upgrade to the newer extruder. An additional $99 may not be much when purchasing a $2,000+ device, but the company should include the new extruder as a standard component.

The Replicator has gone a long way toward making the 3D printer look more like a modern, mobile- and cloud-friendly device. The onboard camera and mobile app allow you to control and monitor your builds remotely. The camera also makes it easy to share socially when combined with the device’s inherent cloud connectivity. The Replicator also provides several options for connecting to a computer, going beyond the typical USB connectivity to include Wi-Fi and Ethernet options as well.

The device features an outstanding user interface with a 3.5-inch, full color LCD display and intuitive dial control. The interface assists users with setup and maintenance of the 3D printer as well as providing access to their document library and control of the device.
